Christmas Eve was one in which I tried to institute traditions my mom did when my brother and I were growing up; to some degree that is. We had a nice time watching Christmas movies, like Santa Paws, taking a fun trip to the park, making and decorating Christmas cookies, and reading "The Night Before Christmas" before bed. Unfortunately, due to the wet Christmas Eve night we had, we were unable to drive around looking at Christmas lights, but we saved that fun tradition for Christmas Day.
We have discovered that Nico loves eating raw cookie dough! Although he and I have made cookies in the past, it seemed to have resonated with him this time around. He did not seem to understand what we were doing with the bowl of yummy dough and just wanted to eat it all, but after breaking out the cookie cutters, Nico became a little baker! Even more fun to watch was Nico decorating the cooked cookies with icing, candy and sprinkles! Needless the say, the kitchen was a mess and someone was full of sugar afterwards.
Dressing one's children up as fictional holiday characters was not a tradition that I was attempting to carry on from my mother (just to clarify, she did not do this); however, when Pops and I were at the mall with the little man a few weeks ago, we just couldn't resist the Christmas Elf PJ's! I mean seriously, did you think an elf could be this cute? The great thing was that Nico was excited about wearing the PJ's and it took some coaxing to get him to change clothes the next day.
As with many families around the world on Christmas Eve, we were expecting Santa's visit that night. Of course Santa would be requiring cookies and milk during his stop to deliver Nico the many, many presents that appeared under the tree. Nico was able to place some of the cookies he helped to make earlier that day on a tray to share with Santa.
Before Nico was all "nestled snug in his bed, with visions of sugar plums dancing in his head," I read him the very old story, from the very same book my mother read to me every Christmas Eve, "The Night Before Christmas."
Little did Nico know what would be waiting for him in the morning...
